Bactiguard® coating in our Foley Catheter portfolio
Our Foley catheter portfolio includes the Bardex™ I.C. Foley Catheter and the Lubri-Sil™ I.C. Silicone Foley Catheter, supplied by BD. Both product ranges combine Bactiguard® coating with Bard® Hydrogel Coating.
How does Bactiguard® coating work?
Bactiguard® coating is based on a very thin noble-metal alloy consisting of gold, silver and palladium. When the coating comes into contact with fluids, the metals create a galvanic effect.
This galvanic effect generates a microcurrent that reduces microbial adhesion to the catheter material.
The galvanic effect creates a micro current that reduces microbial adhesion to the catheter material, which decreases the risk for biofilm formation leading to infection.
The reduction of microbial adhesion and colonization to device surfaces has been verified for clinically relevant microbial strains using an in vitro test. It evaluates the adhesion of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi to device surfaces.
The reduction of microbial colonization has been observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pictures show the colonization of E. Coli on an uncoated surface versus on a Bactiguard® Coated surface. Less bacteria colonized on the Bactiguard® Coated surface.
The Bactiguard® coating is combined with Bard® Hydrogel Coating. The coatings are applied to both the internal and external surfaces of the catheter. Bactiguard® coating requires no special procedures for handling, use or disposal.
